10 Warning Signs You Have Leaky Gut Syndrome
/10 Warning Signs You Have Leaky Gut Syndrome
How many times do you hear people say that they’re tired and achy? That getting old sucks even though they are still in their early 30s (or even younger?!)
How many times do people say that they can’t get a good night of sleep? Hey! What’s new? We all can have sleep issues due to stress, or eating too late or not being able to unwind after a busy day right?
And then there’s the gas ‘n’ Bloating? Well, I can justify that by saying that my diet sucks right now and I’m eating the car or at my desk while I’m working 18 hours a day.
These are all very common things to gripe about, so if you're going through the same thing, you may think it’s normal. But the way you feel may be your body telling you that you’re suffering from Leaky Gut Syndrome.
What exactly is Leaky Gut Syndrome?
If you haven’t heard of Leaky Gut Syndrome, you’re not alone. A lot of doctors aren’t aware of it and even deny it exists. You’ll hear “its all in your head” even though its nowhere near your head.
If you feel bad enough to make an appointment, your doctor might order a bunch of tests. These could include tests perhaps for Lyme disease, a hormone test, thyroid dysfunction and maybe even Mononucleosis. If all of the tests are negative, they’ll tell you to get more sleep and you’ll feel better. It can be so frustrating,
But if it’s Leaky Gut, then there’s more going on in your gut than meets the eye.
Leaky Gut is a condition in which the intestine’s lining is damaged. The permeability of the intestinal wall as weakened and this enable bacteria and undigested food leak through and enter the bloodstream. This causes an inflammatory response that can lead to everything from chronic fatigue and food allergies to migraines and rheumatoid arthritis.
I like the analogy of a fishing net:
The small intestine is your absorption site for nutrients and the colon is like your sewage system. There is a natural “selective osmosis” going on so that certain e.g. undigested or even harmful nutrients such as proteins or gluten are not supposed to be absorbed so normally they would continue to travel through the digestive system to be eliminated. BUT, if the “net” has holes in it – then those food particles, or maybe they are toxins or even parasites, LEAK out directly into the blood system as if they were healthy nutrients feeding the body. The “net” would normally have small gaps to only allow selective certain nutrients through but now it has been damaged so “anything and everything” leaks out.
What now?
Now that you have a damaged intestinal lining, you can’t digest food properly, so you’re not getting the nutrients you need. Hence: lack of energy that can show itself at some point as immense fatigue and even malnutrition.
This leakage is dangerous and can cause many symptoms as the body struggles to manage the “invading” molecules or toxins whenever you eat. The result can be allergies, inflammation, immune overload, fatigue, gas, bloating, elimination issues and more.

What Causes Leaky Gut Syndrome?
There are many things that can cause Leaky Gut Syndrome. Taking some medicines, including over-the-counter pain relievers, antibiotics, or steroids can set it off. These drugs cause inflammation in the mucus layers of the intestines and tissue thinning.
Diagnosing Leaky Gut Syndrome starts with testing your diet to find food allergies. You may be very surprised at what you find. Often there will be at least one favorite food that you NEVER thought could be your worst enemy!
You need to find the foods that are irritating you and remove them from your diet ASAP. Only then can you start to heal. The most common problem foods are gluten, dairy, corn, refined sugar, and soy. Some people are also affected by caffeine and alcohol.
Finding your food triggers will make an almost instant difference in how you feel now and help prevent future flare ups. To do this you can try going on an elimination diet. its a simple diet that enables you to go on a restrictive list of foods for a short amount of time then slowly reintroduce one food such as gluten to see if there is a reaction. You continue on the restrictive diet then introduce another food such dairy. And so on.
Dr. Gundry M.D has come up with some reliable products for leaky gut. The “Total Restore” product has been successful and has good reviews. It has ingredients to heal the gut lining as well as reduce inflammation.
Probiotics and Soil Based organisms can be a big help too. You’ll have much more energy and be in a better mood. You’ll also find that your intestinal symptoms and headaches stop completely. Garden of Life offers a good product “ Primal Defense” with soil based organisms.
Identifying Leaky Gut is something you can do on your own, but you’re better off finding a medical professional who is an expert in nutritional issues. They can guide you on your journey to help you find the right foods to heal your gut and feel better.
